2[]02TheWorkoftheHolySpirit.WhatIsIt?WhatAreItsRelationsAndses?UIknowofnoreligiouspeoplewhointentionallydenyhisagencyincreation,providenceorredemption.Butmendifferwidelyintheiropinionsconcerningitanditsrelationsanduses.Manyhonest-heartedpersonshavebeeneducatedinthetheoryofanimmediateanddirectoperationoftheSpiritupontheheartsofsinnersinordertotheirconversion,whichtheyoftencallthebaptismoftheHolySpirit.OnthisaccountthousandsofprayersareofferedupcontinuallytoinducetheLordtopourtheSpirituponsinnersandconvertandsavethem.AndhappymeetingsareattributedtowonderfuloutpouringsoftheSpirit.Whatishiswork?Itissaidthathemoveduponthefaceofthegreatdeep,andthatGodsaid,Lettherebelight,andtherewaslight.Thisoperationuponphysicalnaturegavetoourplanetcosmiclight,andthedarkness,whichhadshutoutthelightoftheheavenlybodiesthroughthelonglapseoftimeextendingbackfromMoses'firstdaytothebeginninginwhichcreationtookplace,wasremoved.Activityhavingbeguninmatter,periodsoflightanddarknessalternateuntiltheconditionsofourplanetaresochangedthatthelightoftheheavenlybodiesbecomesthelightofthisworld;andthegreatworkoftheSpirithavingaccomplisheditspurposes,isclassifiedwiththeextraordinaryeffortsofGodinbringingintoexistencethisbeautifulplanetarysystemofours.Itis,consequently,aworkofthepast.ButtheworkoftheSpiritisnotover.Theremustbeamoralandspiritualsystem,aswellasa
3physical.Asthematerialsystemwouldbeunworthyofitscreator,wereitnotforthefactthatitisgovernedbylaw,whichisequivalenttosaying,itisasystem,sothemoralandspiritualmustbeunderlaw,inordertotheaccomplishmentoftheendsofitscreation,whichisequaltosaying,itisGod'smoralgovernment.Buthowisthissystemtobebroughtintoexistence?Andhowisittobeperpetuated?Inansweringthesequestionsletusrememberthelawofanalogy,baseduponthesimpleaxiomthatGodisaGodoforder.IntheuseoftheanalogyabouttobeinstitutedwesimplypassthroughtheoutercourtofthetempleofGodinordertobeholdthebeautiesoftheinner.Then,astheworldofmatterexistedasaninactive,confusedmass,surroundedbyanenvelopeofdarknesswhichshutoutthelightoftheheavens,sothehumanfamily,withouttheknowledgeofGod,withoutthelightofknowledge,lefttoitsownmentalandmoralwanderings,withoutlaworsystemororder,wouldpresentallthehorrorsofpagandarknessandwoe.ThentheSpiritofGodmustmoveagaininobediencetothemandateoftheMostHigh.Andastheobjecttobeaccomplishedisnowconnectedwithmind,theSpiritnowmovesuponthefaceofthegreatdeepofthehumanheartormind.Butshallhemoveuponallheartsthroughoutalltimeinordertodispelmoraldarkness,andsotheextraordinarybecometheordinary?Orshallhemoveinanextraordinarymannerandcausethelightofrevelationtoflashacrosstheworldanddispelthedarknessconsequentuponthementalandmoralconditionofthechildrenofmen,andgiveusagloriouslampoflight,alongwithlaw,orderandsystem?Andhastheextraordinarygivenplacetotheordinary?Andwhatistheuseoftheordinaryifwehavetheextraordinary,ortheuseoftheextraordinaryifwehavetheordinary?AstheoperationoftheSpirituponthefaceofthegreatdeepwastodispelthesurroundingdarknessandrevealthesunintheheavens,withallthelesserlightbearers,whicharedependentuponthesunforthelighttheygivetoourplanet,[02]3
[204]4TheChristianFoundation,June,1880sotheextraordinarymovementoftheSpiritupontheworldofmindwastogiveuslightintheplaceofdarknessandrevealtheSonofGod,whoisthe SunofRighteousness, whorose withhealinginhisbeams. ThisworkoftheSpiritupontheworldofmindisdoubtedbynoChristian,for holymenofoldspakeastheyweremoveduponbytheHolySpirit. Theknowledgethuscommunicatedwasgiventotheprophetsofold,withoutactionupontheirpartthatistosay,theydidnotattainuntoitbytakingthoughtwhattheyshouldspeakorsay,forintheproperhour,whenitwasneedful,itwasgiventothem.Thisgrandprocedurewaskeptupuntilthe MysteryofChrist wasrevealed,oruntilthelightoftheknowledgeofthegloryofGod,inthefaceofJesusChrist,burstuponthevisionoftheworld.Now,hebeingthebrightnessoftheFather'sgloryandtheexpressimageofhisperson,andithavingpleasedtheFatherthatinhimallfullnessshoulddwell,heisthe LightoftheWorld God'sgreatlightbearer.AlongwiththerevelationofChristcomesarevelationofallthelesserlightsthatshineoutinthementalandmoralheavens,whohavebeen,andare,dependentuponhimfortheirknowledge,orlight.InordertogivetheworldthisrevelationofChrist,Jehovahselectedhisownmen,andconfirmedtheirmission,andtheSpiritmovedupontheirheartstogivelightuntiltheChrist,himself,withallhissatellites,shouldshineforthinthelightoflife.Thesemenweretheancientprophetsofthe HighandHolyOne. TheywereteacherssentfromGod.Theirmissionwasconfirmedbythewondrousworkswhichtheywereenabledtoperform.Nicodemusunderstoodthismatterwhenhesaid, Rabbi,weknowthouartateachersentfromGod,fornomancandotheseworkswhichthoudostexceptGodbewith .mihThelittleJewishmaidenwhowaitedonNaaman'swifeunderstoodit,forshesaidtoher, WouldtoGodmyLordwerewiththeprophetinSamaria!forhewouldcurehimofhisleprosy. ItissaidofthedisciplesofChristthatthey went
5everywherepreachingtheword,theLordworkingwiththemandconfirmingthewordwithsignsfollowing. Andalso,thatthegreatsalvation, whichatthefirstbegantobespokenuntousbytheLord,wasconfirmeduntousbythosewhoheardhim,Godalsobearingthemwitnessbothwithsignsandwonders,anddiversmiraclesandgiftsoftheHolySpirit. AndthattheapostlespreachedthegospelwiththeHolySpiritsentdownfromheaven.ItwascommunicatedtotheprophetsandapostlesbytheSavior,andtotheworldatlargethroughthem.AsproofofthispropositionPetersays, TheprophetssearcheddiligentlywithreferencetothetimewhichtheSpiritofChrist,thatwasinthem,didsignifywhenittestifiedbeforehandofthesufferingsofChristandoftheglorywhichshouldfollow. ItwasanimportantworkforChristtoteachhisapostles,andwhentheyhadheardhimthroughallhistoilstheywerenotsufferedtogoforth,orshineasstarsinthechurch'scrown,untiltheyweremoveduponbytheSpiritofGodtobringtotheirremembrancethosethingswhichJesushadtaughtthem.Butoneothercoursecouldhavebeenpursued,andtherewereinsurmountabledifficultiesinthewayofitsadoption,andthatwastomaketheextraordinaryordinarybycausingtheHolySpirittomoveuponallheartsthroughoutalltime,andgivetoeachmemberoftherace,regardlessofhischaracterandthemannerinwhichhemightabuseit,theentirerevelation.Thefirstdifficultyisinthefactthatwickedmenwhowilfullydeceivewouldhaveconfrontedthebestmenupontheearth,andconfusionwithoutremedywouldhavebeentheresultofleavingourworldwithoutacommonandinfallibletest.Anotherdifficultyappears,inthefactthatitwouldhavecompromisedthepurityofGodthroughthepresenceoftheHolySpiritintheheartsofallthevileandabominablesinnersofearth.Therewasonewaytoavoidtheseresults,andthatwastoirresistiblydestroyalldispositioninhumanheartstohavetheirownway,andsoremainunworthyofthepresenceofthe05]2[
6TheChristianFoundation,June,1880DivineSpirit;butthiswouldhavebeenacompletedestructionofmoralfreedomalongwithalltheprinciplesofaccountability,andconsequentlyadestructionofGod'smoralgovernment.MoralfreedomwassosacredwithGodthat thespiritoftheprophetswassubjecttotheprophet. Hence,theimportanceofthesearcherofheartschoosinghisownprophetsoutfromamongmen. God,whoinancienttimesanddiversemanners,spakeintimepastuntothefathersbytheprophets,hath,intheselastdays,spokenuntousbyhisson. TheLordofHostsguardedthisgreatworkwithreferencetothedeliveranceofmanbythemostseverepenalty.Thelawgoverningtheprophetswasinthesewords: AndthatprophetwhichshallspeakawordinmynamewhichIcommandedhimnot,orthatshallspeakinthenameofothergods,eventhatprophetshalldie. Heguardedhisowninfiniteandspotlesspurity.Whilehewas inthegenerationoftherighteous,hewasfarfromthewicked. Sotherewasalways,fromthetimeofAdam'soffensetillthepresentsuchathingasbeing withoutGod. WhentheJewishpeoplebecameapostateinthetimesofMalachi,whowasthelastOldTestamentprophet,theHolySpiritlefttheworld.TheproofisintheSavior'swordstohisdisciples: IfIgonotaway,theComforterwillnotcomeuntoyou. Andoneofthewitnessessaid, TheHolySpiritwasnotyetgivenbecauseJesuswasnotyetglorified. DuringthelongnightofapostacybetweenMalachiandZechariah,therewasatimewhen allweregoneoutoftheway; whentherewerenonethatdidgood,no,notone; whendarknesscoveredtheearth,andgrossdarknessthepeople; whentheyhadnotsomuchas thedayspringfromonhigh,togiveknowledgeofsalvationbytheremissionofsins. ThetempleofGodwasadenofthieves. ThecommandmentsofGodweremadevoidthroughthetraditionsofmen,andtherewasnotapeopleupontheearthpreparedfortheLord,worthyofhisintroductionamongthemASTHESONOFGOD.Thedignityofhisperson,consequentuponhis
7beingtheSonofGod,alongwithhispurity,rendereditimproperforhimtobemanifested,inhisintroductionastheSonofGod,toadenofthieves.Soapeoplemustbepreparedfortheoccasion.HenceJohntheBaptistwassentfromGodtoprepareormakereadyapeoplefortheLord.Hewasthe dayspringfromonhigh, senttogiveknowledgeofsalvationuntothepeoplebytheremissionoftheirsins,buttheultimateofhisworkisexpressedinthesewords: Butthathe,Christ,mightbemademanifestuntoIsrael,thereforecameIbaptizingwithwater. Whichwasasmuchastosay,HewillnotbemademanifesttoIsraelunlessapeopleinIsraelismadereadyforhim.ThereforeJohnwashisforerunner,topreparethewaybeforehim.IndoingthisworkheproclaimedthekingdomofGodisathand,and preachedthebaptismofrepentancefortheremissionofsins. AndmanypeoplewerepreparedfortheLord,andfinallyheisacknowledged,fromtheeternalworld,astheSonofGod,whileheisyetinthepresenceofallthosewhowerepresentathisbaptismandheardJohnsay, BeholdtheLambofGod,whotakethawaythesinoftheworld. TheSaviornowcallsabouthimtwelvedisciples,andtheymakeandbaptizemanymoredisciples.JohntheBaptistandJesusChrist,asprophets,wereundertheinfluenceoftheHolySpirit,andwereengagedinthegrandestworkeverknownamongmen.But,sofarasawickedworldwasconcerned,itmustberedeemedfrommoralpollutionfirst,andthenawaitthedayofPentecostforthegiftoftheHolySpirit.Thuskeepingbeforeourmindshisrelationstomen,weaskwhatwashisworkandrelationsfromPentecostandonward?Onthatdayhecameuponthedisciples,whowerealreadyconvertedandpardoned;soitwasnotforthosepurposesthattheywerebaptizedintheHolySpirit.Jesushadsaidtothem,longbeforethis, NowyearecleanthroughthewordswhichIhavespokenuntoyou. AndthewickedJewshad closedtheireyesandstoppedtheirears,lesttheyshouldseewiththeireyesandhearwiththeirearsandunderstandwiththeirheartsandbe[02]6
