To understand the different challenges business face when they operate in a global environment. 2. To cover a broad range of international business issues from an interdisciplinary viewpoint and emphasizing the key concerns of the multinational and global corporation. 3. To assist students to develop a truly global perspective. 4. To assist students to integrate into their thinking the important societal dimensions of diversity, environmental concerns, ethics, political and legal systems, and technological change. 5. To develop knowledge and skills to analyze cross cultural variables and their impact on international business Required text: Global – 2010 Edition by Mike W. Attendance and participation in discussions (30% of grading) The primary vehicle for accomplishing the learning objectives of this course will be class discussions. Attendance and participation in discussion are very important for this course. During the semester we will discuss various topics covered in the text book as well as case studies. Group presentation project (15% of grading): Students will be divided into groups with each group consisting of 3 or 4 members. Each group will choose one country of the emerging economies as a research project and prepare a 20 minute presentation at the last class meeting. Detailed instructions will be given by the instructor. By the end of third weekend each group will submit a one page proposal of the project. Homework assignments (15% of grading): In addition to reading the chapters of the text book and the materials distributed in class, each week you will select an article with the topic related to the chapters and issues we have discussed in class. You will bring a copy of the article and a one page review to the class for discussion. The article can be selected from newspapers or magazines, such as Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Business Week or Fortune, and etc. Individual research paper (30% of grading): An individual research paper with 10 – 15 pagers in length will be required. At the end of second week, you will select a topic and submit a one paragraph proposal. At the end of the third week you will submit a thesis statement (see below), and a 1 to 2 page outline of the paper and bibliography of at least 10 works. There must be other sources in the bibliography in addition to the Internet – books, interviews, broadcasts etc. At the end of the fourth weekend,a rough draft of the paper at least 5 pages in length must be submitted. The final paper is due the last weekend. Thesis Statement A statement that articulates the purpose of a research paper. It should be a sentence (or two sentences) presenting the main point of a persuasive writing, usually in the introductory paragraph. If any of the above deadlines for the research paper are missed the final grade will be reduced by 2%. No late papers accepted

WEEK 2 (January 28th): Global Part I: Laying Foundations Chapter3: Emphasizing Cultures, Ethics and Norms Chapter4: Leveraging Resources and Capabilities Assignment for Week 3: •Read Global Part II •Prepare a thesis statement, and a 1 to 2 page outline of your research paper and bibliography of at least 10 works. There must be some other sources in the bibliography in addition to the Internet – books, interviews, broadcasts etc. •The Thesis Statement, together with the outline will be submitted at the end of next class meeting.

The final paper is due the last weekend.
