ANSI 5010
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is
currently in implementation process to convert from Health
Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Accredited
Standards Committee (ASC) X12 version 4010A1 to ASC X12
version 5010 and National Council for Prescription Drugs
Programs (NCPDP) version 5.1 to NCPDP version D.0.
ANSI 5010 (cont.)
The Secretary adopted version 5010 to replace the current version
of the X12 standard that covered entities must use when
conducting electronic transactions including: claims, claim status,
payments for providers, eligibility, referrals, enrollment and
disenrollment, Coordinator of Benefits and premium payments.
The Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services
has adopted ASC X12 version 5010 and NCPDP version D.0 as
the next HIPAA standard for HIPAA covered transactions.
The final rule was published on January 16, 2009
ANSI 5010 (cont.)
The Secretary also adopted version D.0 to replace the current
version of the NCPDP standard covered entities must use for
pharmacy and supplier transactions including: claims, eligibility,
referral certification and authorization, and Coordinator of
Benefits.
The current versions of the standards version 4010/4010A1 and
the NCPDP version 5.1 are widely recognized as lacking certain
functionality that the health care industry needs.
