SpecialEducation4000EducationofExceptionalIndividualsSpring2012DarciePeterson,M.Ed.EducationBuilding,Room371OfficePhone:797‐3252E‐mail:SendemailthroughCANVAS(online.usu.edu)OfficeHours:TuesdaysandFridays2‐5andbyappointmentOverview:Thisisahybridcourse.Theon‐campusundergraduatespecialeducationprogramconsistsofhybridcourses,whichconsistofbothon‐lineandlivecourseactivities.On‐lineactivitiesaredesignedtoprovideflexibilityforthestudent.Livesessionsareimportantcomponentsofallcoursesandprovideopportunitiesforinteractionswithinstructors,guestspeakers,andclassmates.Exams,readings,classinformationandsomeassignments,etc.willbelocatedonCANVAS.IfyouareunfamiliarwithCANVAS,youcangetfurtherinstructionontheCANVAShomepage(online.usu.edu)under“StudentTutorials”.Also,whereindicatedonthecourseschedule,anumberofclasstopicswillbecompletedonlineonlyusingIRISStarLegacyModules.FurtherinstructionswillbegiventhroughCANVASregardingtheon‐linesessions.Onthoseindicatedsessions,studentswillbedismissedfromclassearlyandwillcompletespecifiedassignmentsoutsideoftheclassroom.CourseObjectives:ObjectiveHow/WhenObjectiveisMet1.GainingfactualWeeklyreadingsknowledge(terminology,MidtermExamclassifications,methods,FinalExamtrends).Studentswillcomeawaywithsomebasicfacts,definitions,causes,psychological/behavioralcharacteristics,andeducationalapproachesconcerningpersonswithdisabilitiesasfollows:intellectualdisabilities,learningdisabilities,emotional/behaviordisorders,communicationdisorders,hearingimpairments,and/orphysicaldisabilities.Studentswillhaveabasicknowledgeoflegalissuessurroundingspecialeducation,includingbutnotlimitedto,understandingSection504,ADA,andIDEIA(IndividualswithDisabilitiesEducationalImprovementAct2004).Studentswillbegintoidentifyimportantcomponentsofbehaviormanagementplansfortheirfutureclassrooms.2. LearningtoapplycourseReflectionJournalsmaterial(toimproveUnannouncedClassActivitiesthinking,problemsolving,DisabilityLawin‐classassignmentanddecisions).StudentswillbeabletoidentifysimilaritiesanddifferencesbetweenlawsprotectingstudentswithdisabilitiesunderSection504,ADAandIDEIAandapplythistostudentsintheirownclassrooms.Studentswillbeabletoidentifyproblembehavior,potentialcausesforthebehavior,andofferrealisticsolutionstoalleviatethebehaviorintheirownclassrooms.3. Developingspecificskills,ReflectionJournalscompetencies,andpointsIRISModulesaddressingselecttopicsofviewneededbyStudentswillleavethiscoursewithabetterappreciationofwhatitisliketohaveaprofessionalsinthefielddisabilityorhaveafamilymemberwhohasadisability.Thiscourseshouldhelpmostcloselyrelatedtocreatehealthier,positive,butrealisticattitudestowardpeoplewithdisabilities.thiscourse.
CourseResourceMaterialsYouarerequiredtoreadidentifiedhandoutsspecifiedforeachsessionforthiscourse.Informationfromthehandoutswillbefoundontheexams.Studentshavetwooptionstoobtaintheserequiredhandouts.1. READINGSINCOURSEREADER:ThereisacoursereaderavailabletopurchasethroughtheUSUbookstoreforallSPED4000courses.Thiscoursereadercontainsalltherequiredreadingsforthiscourse.OR2. READINGSONCANVAS:ThereadingswillalsobeavailablethroughCANVAS.ItisyourchoicetopurchasethereaderordownloadtheassignedmaterialthroughCANVASCourseAssignments:ExplanationsandfurtherinstructionsforeachassignmentcanbefoundonCANVAS.AvailabilitydatesandduedatescanbefoundonCANVASforeachassignmentand/oronthecourseschedule.Assignmentsaredue½hourbeforethebeginningofclassonthespecifiedduedate.NOassignmentswillbeacceptedonceassignmentsareclosedonCANVAS.1.DisabilityLawThisisanin‐classgroupassignment.Itisworth20points.Nomakeuporalternativeassignmentwillbegiventostudentswhomissthisclass.2.ClassroomactivitiesTherewillbe10unannouncedactivitiesthroughoutthesemester.Theseactivitiesmayincludeguestlectures,videos,assessments,hands‐onactivities,popquizzes,etc.Onthedaysactivitiesareincluded,youwillbeaskedtoturninspecificpaperworkorsignarollgivingyoucreditforparticipatingintheactivity.Youwilldroponeactivity(incaseofillness,familyactivities,awedding,missedalarm,etc.).YouwillNOTbeabletomakeupanyclassroomactivities.3.JournalReflection:AssignedReadingsYouwillberequiredtoreflectontheassignedreadings(handouts).Refertoyourcoursescheduletoidentifytheweekeachentryisdue.Thereareafewweekswherethereisnoentryrequired.UndertheCourseContentpage,youwillfindthelinktopostyourentry.Mostentrieswillbeworth5points(2willbeworth10points)andyouwillNOTbeabletodropanyofyourentries.Aspecificquestionforeachentrywillbeprovided.Yourscorewillbearesultofyourthoroughnessandthoughtfulnessofyourresponse.Ataminimum,yourresponseshouldbeatleast250wordsinlengthincludingbothyouranswertothequestionandyourreflection.ItmighthelpifyouwritetheresponseusingaprogramlikeWordtomeasurelength.ThenyoucancopyandpastewhatyouwroteintoCANVAS.Pleasedemonstrateanunderstandingofthereading.Ifyouusesmallpartsofthereadinginyourresponse,pleaseparaphraseintoyourownwords(changingoneortwowordsinasentenceisnotenough),orusequotationmarkstoreflectthatyouareusingthewordsdirectlyfromthetext.Whenthejournalsaregraded,thegraderwillfirstlooktomakesurethatallpartsofthequestionareansweredcorrectly.So,ifthequestionhasmultipleparts(likeinReflectionJournal5‐Families),betweenoneandfourpointswillbeearnedbyansweringeachpartofthequestion.Theremainingpointsareearnedbyprovidingsufficientexplanationandreflectionaboutwhatyoulearned.Explanationandreflectionmeansthatyoushouldprovideyourownpersonalviewpoint.Youcantalkaboutwhetheryouagreeordisagreewiththeinformationyouread.Youcantalkaboutsomepossiblefearsorgoalsyouhaveaboutusingtheknowledgeyouhavegained.Youcangiveveryspecific
