Akiva school offers a variety of extra curricular activities taking place before, during and after
school. Please note that though the clubs are run in Akiva school, the administration is done by the
club coordinators. Please contact them directly with your queries. Some club letters are available in
the school office .

The children will be competing in the North London League, The Barnet Jamboree and the
National Schools Championships (Pontins!) They will also be starting the UK Land
Challenge the worlds biggest tournament.

Chess develops a number of skills such as pattern recognition and memory, analytical
ability, decision making, imagination and self-discipline, all of which can naturally help
children in the academic arena.

The cost of this club has not gone up for the 8th year.

Infant Choir—Year 1 & 2 children are welcome to sing, dance and enjoy music together with
Jane Gordon assisted by Sara Schaffer.


Junior Choir– Children in years 3-6 are welcome to sing together with Jane Gordon assisted
by Sara Schaffer. This choir now focuses mainly on learning and performing musicals. We
have participated in both Jewish and secular music choir events. In the past this group have
performed in venues including the Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Israeli Dance Festival.

We end the year for both groups with a concert for
parents.

Dance Club will continue again next term. The club is held every Monday at lunchtime and is open to all pupils in Year 1. Pupils are 
given 15 minutes to have their hot lunch prior to the class and collected and taken to the studio next door ready to begin 
thpromptly at 12.15 pm. The first club will be held on Monday 9  January and every subsequent Monday for the next eleven weeks 
excluding half term.  
 
The cost of the Club is £60. Cheques should be made payable to Mari MacKenzie and given to the school office in a secure 
thenvelope by Monday 28  November.  Please note: places are limited and will be allocated on first come first serve basis. This 
payment is not refundable should your child miss a session, behave inappropriately or choose to drop out. The last session (which 
thall parents/carers are invited to watch) will be at the usual time on Monday 26  March 2012. If you are planning to attend the last 
class showing, please make a note of this date. 
 
Mari MacKenzie Dip Royal Ballet School (PDTC) will, as usual, lead the Dance Club. Born in Portland Oregon, USA Mari grew up in 
Mexico, Spain and Austria before finally settling in London.  She trained at the Rambert School of Ballet and became a soloist 
with Northern Ballet Theatre. She went to New York and worked with the Metropolitan Opera before becoming principal dancer 
of Ballet Hispanico of New York. It was with Ballet Hispanico that Mari expanded her skills as a dancer and learnt Flamenco, 
African and Latin American dances. Since her return to England, Mari has pursued a career as a dancer, choreographer and 
teacher and works extensively in Film, Television, Musical Theatre and Opera. She was Education manager for the Royal Ballet 
and for Royal Opera House Education’s ‘Chance to Dance’ project. She danced in Kevin Spacey’s film ‘Beyond the Sea’ and with 
Graham Norton in ‘Strictly Dance Fever’. Mari runs After‐school dance clubs for a wide range of ages and abilities, from primary 
schools to secondary schools. She is the founder and director of Culture Club a dance/drama/art scheme that runs in the school 
holidays for children that creates and performs musicals in five days. Mari has also been a judge on the Olivier Awards dance 
panel. Mari still maintains a career as a performer and ensures any absences incurred as a result of this work are covered by other 
highly qualified and professional dancers/teachers. 
 
The Dance Club will be, above all, fun and introduce the children to a wide variety
