th Gaithersburg High School9 GradeEnglish Class Expectations &Class Contractth Teachers on the 9grade team: Ms. Adams, Mr. Ducas, Ms. Henning, Ms. Kushner, Ms. Quinn, Ms. Verdejo My Email address:Edith_Verdjo@mcps.md.eduEnglish Office # (301) 8404740 Your opinions are valued in our classes.The rules and procedures of this class have been . established around the fundamental ideas of respect and responsibility Course Description: th ·9 gradeEnglish provides many opportunities for students to explore literary concepts in a variety of genres. ·The Enduring Understandings and Essential Questions reflect this focus and, at the same time, emphasize the development of students’ critical reading, writing, and thinking skills. th ·Anchor and supplementary texts align with the 9grade Social Studies curriculum wherever practicable, inviting students to analyze the cultural and historical dynamics of the work. ·Practice in strategic and close critical reading, grammar study, and writing assignments, including the common tasks, not only prepare students for the Maryland High School Assessments but also prepare students for the challenges of a rigorous English high school curriculum. How ouwill beraded: Grading Policy: A point system with percentages will be used when calculating grades. Scale: A= 10090; B= 8980; C= 7970; D= 6960; E=59 and below County wideFinal Exam: 25% (at end of semester) Deadlines and Due Dates are the same and most assignments will not be accepted late. When assignments are accepted late, they will be downgraded. Work not attempted by the deadline date will be recorded as a zero. Students who complete an original assessment may have the opportunity for reassessment on some tasks. These do not include common tasks or summative assessments. How your grades will be calculated *Common tasks=50% Tests and Quizzes20% Inclass Assignments20% Homework10% *Common tasks include BCRs, ECRs, & other written projects.
In Ms. Verdejo’s Class, I agree to abide by the following policies: Attendance: When you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you have missed and to make up the work. Your absences must be excused in order for you to receive credit for your makeup work. LOSS OF CREDIT POLICY: 3 unexcused tardies – 1 unexcused absence. 5 unexcused absences may result in a loss of credit. Tardiness: Come to class on time. Be ready to begin when the bell rings. Three unexcused tardies become one unexcused absence. Homework: All assignments are to be completed at home and will be collected at the beginning of class. It is your responsibility to complete your reading assignments in a timely fashion. Late work: Most assignments will not be accepted late. Major assignments (common tasks) will be accepted on day late, but will be penalized one letter grade. Cheating: Plagiarizing and cheating are serious offences. You will receive an “E” for the assignment and face disciplinary action. Materials: GHS agenda book English binder or section for English in a large binder: 2 pens & pencils 2 packs of small 2”x2” postit (very important) Folder for returned work is recommended but not required. Classroom Rules: All school rules apply in this room. THESE COMMON TASKS MUST BE COMPLETED IN ORDER TO PASS THIS CLASS. You will be taking a Preassessment test at the beginning of each marking period that will model the High School Assessment Test (HAS) that you will be taking next year. You do not need to prepare for this assessment. This is a way for me to see what your strengths and weaknesses are, and what we need to focus on as a class this semester.
You will be required to keep a portfolio. This portfolio will hold all of your common tasksand projects. You will be required to write a reflection for each task. The portfolio will remain in the classroom and move with your throughout your high school career. By the end of English 9 you should be able to understand the following: ·How literature reflects the history of a people and enriches its culture ·How particular conventions and characteristics define literary genres ·How effective readers, writers and speakers engage actively with text to create meaning ·How effective readers, writers and speakers master the subtleties of text and language Essential Questions: ·How do authors reflect the dynamics of society? ·How do characteristics of a genre affect the expression of ideas? ·How does subtext deepen understanding of a text? ·How do culture, gender and social factors affect communications?
