II.You will need two posters for this project.On the first poster, draw a circle or wheel with eight equal segments.Label each “slice” as follows:1)Setting (In what time and place does this story unfold?) 2)Protagonist (Who is the main character or ―hero‖ of this piece?)3)Antagonist (Name the person or thing that stands in the way of the protagonist’s desires.)4)Conflicts (Identify the central external AND internal conflicts.) 5)Point of View (How is the story being told?) 6)Mood (Identify the emotion or feeling that dominates the story.) 7)Theme (What is the message or lesson of this story?) 8)Connections (Make a text to self, text, or world comparison.) IIILabel each of the four corners as follows:Mount the wheel onto the second poster. 1)Exposition (How does the story begin?What do we learn about the various characters and their aspirations and desires?) 2)Rising Action (Identify the events and situations that create tension among the characters.) 3)Climax (Identify the most exiting moment in the story—the moment when the tension is thick and you are holding your breath to see how everything will turn out.) 4)How are their lives changed?Resolution (What are the outcomes for the various characters? Choose from these stories below.I have given a brief summary of each short story that we have NOT read this year. ―Flowers for Algernon‖ pg. 32 : Charlie Gordon, who is mentally impaired, undergoes experimental surgery to improve his intelligence. This test had previously been performed on a mouse named Algernon. After surgery, Charlie becomes a genius but he learns you must be ―careful what you wish for‖.―Too Soon a Woman‖ pg. 169: A young boy and his family are traveling west. Along the way, they meet a young woman named Mary who comes along to help with the children. Mary is left alone with the children while the father goes out in search of food, and Mary works very hard to keep the family alive and safe. ―There Will Come Soft Rains‖ pg. 265: For my science fiction buffs!!! Set in California in 2026, a house is set to do everything its owners need it to: make announcements, wash dishes etc. After the city is destroyed by an atom bomb, the house keeps on doing its chores, with no clue that the owners are not there to appreciate its hard work. ―The Circuit‖ pg. 280: Panchito and his family tavel along a ―circuit‖, a path followed by migrant workers from harvest to harvest. Panchito gets tired of moving around and desires to settle down when he finds a teacher who will work with him on his English and give him trumpet lessons, but will his family stay? ―The Flying Machine‖ pg 303: In Ancient China, Emperor Yuan sees a man flying in a flying machine made of paper and reeds. Is ancient China ready for flight and the modern world? ―The Dragon‖ pg. 312: Medieval worlds and the modern world collide when two different groups come in contact with the same ―dragon‖. Those that like the graphic novel genre might like this story. ―The Fog Horn‖ pg. 319: Two men are keepers of a remote lighthouse which is visited by a weird creature at the same time each year. However, this year, is a little different causing the narrator and his friend to have to fight for their lives. ―An Hour with Abuelo‖ pg. 773: Arturo, a teenage boy of Puerto Rican descent, spends an hour visiting his grandfather (Abuelo) in a Brooklyn neighborhood.Although Arturo isn’t eager to spend time with his grandfather,Arturo’s visit is interrupted justthe visit turns out to be a surprising one. when which leaves Arturo wishing he had more time. ―A Smart Cookie‖pg. 747: A Mexican American mother who urges her daughter, Esperanza, to study and take care of herself reveals that she left school because she lacked nice clothes.This story ends with an ironic twist. ―The Treasure of Lemon Brown‖pg. 729:Set is Harlem, this story is about a father who won’t let his son play basketball because Greg, who is fourteen, is failing math.Resentfully Greg skips studying one day and meets Sweet Lemon Brown, an elderly homeless man.Brown begins to confide in Greg after they scare off two thugs and shows him a treasure.Will Greg understand this treasure and what it truly means?
―Ribbons‖pg. 711: While awaiting her grandmother’s visit from Hong Kong, Stacy, the narrator, practices ballet, the thing she loves most.Upon grandmother’s presence, tension arises as she flies into a rage and demands the ribbons be handed ovnext day, Stacy sees her grandmother’s feet ander. The discovers something awful has been done to her. ―The Third Wish‖pg. 101: A man named Mr. Peters rescues a swan, which magically transforms into the King of the Forest. The King grudgingly agrees to grant Mr. Peters three wishes in return for his kindness. Mr. Peters uses his first wish to ask for a beautiful wife. He is very happy with his wife, Leita, but Leita is obviously very unhappy. What will Mr. Peters use his other two wishes for? And what will the consequences be? ―Raymond’s Run‖pg. 546: Squeaky Parker is the fastest runner in her Harlem neighborhood. As the May Day race draws near, Squeaky discovers she has some competition this year–a new girl named Gretchen, who is serious about winning. The day of the race Squeaky situates her mentally handicapped brother, Raymond, on the swings, then warms up. Imagine Squeaky’s surprise when Raymond joins the race!
