WHO WE ARE www.iocs.cam.ac.uk The Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies is the pan-Orthodox house for theological studies in the ancient university city of Cambridge, England. The Institute was founded in 1999 with the blessing of Orthodox hierarchs with responsibilities in the United Kingdom. At a major crossroad for academic exchange, it attracts students and scholars from the world over.

MA COURSE STRUCTURE MA in Pastoral Theology
The MA course consists of five modules:
» An Orthodox Approach to Pastoral Life
» Pastoral Theology in History and Practice
» Texts and Practices in the Early Church
» A fourth optional module
» The MA Dissertation
MA DISSERTATION
The MA dissertation is the goal and crown of the MA programme. It requires from each student independent research but under academic supervision. Students choose their topics according to individual preference and academic interests. It is expected that personal experience will be related to the faith of the Orthodox Church, as expressed in the patristic heritage and in present practice. The Institute is proud of the achievements of its past MA students and of the high proportion of distinctions awarded for their dissertations.
An Orthodox Approach to Pastoral Life: Liturgical theology and the mission of the Church
Institute students must attend the module An Orthodox Approach to Pastoral Life: Liturgical Theology and the Mission of the Church. This module, taught by IOCS staff and visiting Orthodox lecturers, encourages students to bring the teachings of the Church to bear upon contemporary issues in Orthodox pastoral life.
Pastoral Theology in History and Practice (The Core Module)
The compulsory Core Module (Pastoral Theology in History and Practice) has a special importance for our students since it exposes them to the faith and perspective of other denominations, and (most importantly) it challenges them to examine and confess their Orthodox identity, faith and tradition. The module aims to impart the biblical and theological basis for Christian pastoral work — whether that is undertaken formally for a church or informally in everyday life.
Texts and Practices in the Early Church
This compulsory module enables students to undertake a thorough exploration of pastoral practices in the Early Church (to ca. 600 AD). The course focuses on selected primary texts which constitute the indispensable starting point for discussion of the pastoral life of the Early Church. In certain years, students take an alternative ‘Church and Ministry’ module.
Optional Module
Students are required to choose a fourth module from those offered each year by the Cambridge Theological Federation.

There are three principal criteria for admission to the MA in Pastoral Theology, which may be evidenced by formal qualifications or by practical experience.
» Candidates should give evidence of prior learning in Theology or Religious Studies. » Candidates should show that they could work at a level appropriate to a Master’s degree (e.g. BA or equivalent from a recognised university). » Candidates should demonstrate previous or likely future engagement in Christian pastoral work.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS
An English language proficiency test is required for candidates whose mother tongue is not English. The normal expectation is a score of 7.0 or better at IELTS or its equivalent.
COURSE FEES
The cost of the degree will be in the region of £5,500 for UK and EU students and in the region of £9,800 for international students to be paid in advance to the Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies. It is also possible (by arrangement) to pay in three instalments. These fees are subject to periodic review. The fee includes all tuition, supervision, and the use of libraries. The fee does not include any accommodation or meals.

The deadline for receiving the applications is 15 July - for the September intake (Semester 1) and 15 December - for the February intake (Semester 2). Upon acceptance into the MA programme, you will be required to fill out a separate form to register you with Anglia Ruskin University.
MORE THAN JUST AN MA MA in Pastoral Theology
SPIRITUAL AND SOCIAL LIFE
Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the liturgical life of the Institute (the Institute holds services on Friday evening and Saturday morning of each Study Weekend) as well as in the services and events of the Orthodox parishes and of the Orthodox Student Society in Cambridge. Students will also benefit from the spiritual guidance and advice of the Institute’s Chaplain who will be regularly available for students for pastoral conversations. Students are welcome to participate and work in the Institute’s outreach programme, THE WAY, which aims to teach the basics of the Orthodox faith in a course taught once a week over twelve weeks, at various venues in the United Kingdom.
STUDY WEEKENDS AND SUMMER SCHOOL Graduate students are strongly encouraged to attend (without extra charge) the monthly Study weekends and the Annual Summer School organised by the Institute as part of its Certificate/Diploma programmes in Orthodox Christian Studies. Since the Institute invites many distinguished speakers to these courses, from Great Britain and from overseas, graduate students have an opportunity to listen to and meet with renowned Orthodox theologians.
ORTHODOXY IN A MULTI-DENOMINATIONAL CONTEXT
A full member of the Cambridge Theological Federation, IOCS interacts with the Anglia Ruskin University and with the University of Cambridge and offers degrees through those universities. At IOCS students study together with colleagues from other traditions in the Cambridge Theological Federation: Anglican, Methodist, Roman Catholic and Reformed. In this diverse context IOCS students are encouraged to articulate and communicate their Orthodox faith and identity. What is an Orthodox understanding of the faith and how is it to be communicated today? How different are the concerns of the Western churches from those of the Orthodox churches? These are questions that Orthodox students face in a protective environment of dialogue and intellectual debate that will equip them to handle such issues in their home communities.
RESOURCES FOR STUDY
Cambridge offers access to the major libraries of the city and university, to museums, to scholars of note, and to open lectures in many subjects of interest. IOCS itself has a fine library of Orthodox material, much of it bequeathed by Orthodox scholars. Students are able to attend some of the classes and lectures within the Federation and at the Faculty of Divinity. Students may improve their language skills for subsequent research by attending courses in Greek, Latin or Hebrew. In many ways the Institute is a gateway through which one enters the range of theological education in Cambridge and the world beyond.

AN ORTHODOX HOUSE IN CAMBRIDGE
As an Orthodox house, the Institute is a Christian community that expects its students to participate fully in its liturgical and social life, and to attach themselves to one of the Orthodox congregations in Cambridge: St Ephraim’s (Russian tradition, worshipping in English), St Athanasius and St Clement (worshiping in Greek and English) and St John the Evangelist (worshiping in Romanian and English). Students are expected to attend in-house courses on the History of the Church, Research Methods and Study Skills, and on Academic Writing in English. These courses are particularly valuable to overseas students acclimatising to a new academic environment.
