1 1ères DOCTORIALES du Tourisme de la Chaire « Culture, Tourisme, développement » TOURISME / TOURISM Concepts et méthodes à la croisée des disciplines Concepts and methods at the disciplinary crossroads 14-16 septembre 2011 The ecomuseum as an imaginary destination in China The transition of the concept 'ecomuseum' from France to China Lu JIN Xiamen University & UC Berkeley Abstract: My research focuses on the first generation of ecomuseums in China, which were started through a Sino-Norwegian cooperative cultural project between 1997 and 2004 in rural ethnic areas in Guizhou Province. The concept of ecomuseum was originally created in the early 1970s in France as a way to preserve cultural heritage through holistic, in-situ conservation and the participation of local people. However, for the Chinese government, the ecomuseum project is designed to encourage local economic development in addition to cultural preservation. In this paper, I explore different practices of different stakeholders—Western scholars, Chinese government officials and scholars, and local villagers—who are engaged in the development of ecomuseums. Thinking about the reasons of the disparate practices, I focus on the transition of the concept 'ecomuseum' from France to China. The question I propose here is: can we use a Western concept as a practice in China? When the concept was relayed from France to China, the application of the concept wasn't.

1ères DOCTORIALES du Tourisme de la Chaire « Culture, Tourisme, développement »  TOURISME / TOURISM Concepts et méthodes à la croisée des disciplines Concepts and methods at the disciplinary crossroads  14-16 septembre 2011  The ecomuseum as an imaginary destination in China The transition of the concept 'ecomuseum' from France to China Lu JIN Xiamen University & UC Berkeley  Abstract: My research focuses on the first generation of ecomuseums in China, which were started through a Sino-Norwegian cooperative cultural project between 1997 and 2004 in rural ethnic areas in Guizhou Province. An industrial urban society and an agriculture-based ethnic village can never have the same point of reference for the ecomuseum. Through different understandings of ecomuseum concept by locals, officials and tourists, what's the true meaning of the ecomuseum in China? A museum, a method for conservation or a strategy of tourism development? I also try to analyze local strategies for handling the situation, both ideologically and practically: how they deal with the modern concept of 'ecomuseum' and how they balance the power from the government and the self-government in local tourism.  1
